Our region is home to a very diverse range of small native mammals that need our help. There is a variety of reasons we are called to help these animals including:
- Animal living in roof or chimney
- Rat bait poisoning
- Attack by dog or other animal
- Caught on barbed fence, bird netting or power lines
Small mammals in our region:
- Brushtail and ringtail possums
- Sugar and krefft’s gliders
- Rakali – Water rat
- Dunnart – Native rodent
- Antechinus
- Greater Glider
- Koala
- Quolls
- Echidnas
- Big bats – Grey-headed flying fox, little red flying fox
- Little Bats – Microbats, over 21 species in Wildcare area
What to do if you find a sick, injured or orphaned small mammal:
If you find an animal that needs help call our 24/7 Helpline on (02) 6299 1966. Follow the below tips to help give the animal the best chance of survival while waiting for a rescuer.
Keep your distance - Assess the animal from a safe distance so the animal does not feel threatened or feel further distress.
Avoid contact with bats - Bats can carry a range of diseases harmful to humans. Do not attempt to pick up or touch bats, and keep pets and children away.
Keep safe and secure - If you can do so safely, use a box or barier of some sort to secure the animal until a rescuer arrives.
